Homemade Hail Shakes

What do you do with a yard full of one inch hail, like these beauties we watched fall during our blogger break in June (and judging from our current weather, could see again any time).

Run outside, between thunder squalls, wearing a hard hat, or if you're me, and can't find a hard hat, then a batting helmet will do (just in case), and gather as many as you can into a gallon sized freezer bag, noticing as you do, how cold - how really cold, they are.

While you are gathering up the hail, have your children prepare a quart sized freezer bag with 2 cups of milk and two tablespoons of instant pudding mix.

Seal the smaller bag, and place it into the larger hail filled bag.  Add a sprinkle of rock salt to the hail. Seal the larger bag (make sure it's sealed well), and shake vigorously for five minutes, or until all the hail is melted.

Remove the smaller bag from the large bag, and rinse it with cold water to remove the salt water.  Then, snip a corner off...

...and pour the milkshake-like contents into glasses for serving.

Nothing settles little, thunder-frayed nerves better than homemade hail shakes - or maybe it was just the sight of Mommy running around the backyard like a crazy woman, wearing a batting helmet.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

I'm sure it was the milkshake.

At first I was thinking you were going to use the hail in the drink and I was thinking, "Wow, that's crazy!"

Ticia - My children thought that too, and were quite worried when they saw the grass in the bag - I did feed them dandelions earlier in the summer :)

Wow, this hail is humongous. I thought you were trying to make ice cream with it.
