Alice In Wonderland, Pocket Watch Craft

Listening through an audio version of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, for our family story this week, provided the perfect opportunity for a time-telling craft with the younger girls.

I pre-cut the pieces, pictured above, out of thin cardboard and construction paper, after cutting a quick, pocket watch template, using a drinking glass as a guide.

I had the girls glue the yellow construction paper onto the back of the cardboard piece...

...and white circles onto the front, or inside of the watch, so they could draw numbers onto one, as a watch face...

...and sketch little portraits onto the other, for the picture they might like to keep in their watch cases.  I poked a hole in the center of the watch face...

...to attach the construction paper hands through, with a metal fastener.

We found encasing the hands in clear tape before punching holes in them, made them less likely to rip loose, and easier to turn.

Then, we folded the watches closed, with the tab folded over as shown below, to serve as a sort of clasp.  I had planned on cutting a slit in the front of each watch, to push the tab through, but it didn't end up being necessary.

Finally, we punched a hole in the top of the watches, for watch chains - crafted either with a single chain of crochet...

...or finger knitting, with gold colored yarn.

Is that the time?

Oh, no!  We're soooo late.  The queen will have our heads.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

Great project! And I've never heard of finger knitting before, so that was neat to see pictures. :)
