Penguin Rescue - A Roman Numeral Puzzle

For Math Monday this week, I used the penguin counters G made last week for the younger girls, but added a set of fun foam icebergs, as a Roman numeral challenge for the older children.

To make the icebergs, I just cut a piece of fun foam in half...

...and divided each half into fifths, with pencil marks...

...to use as a guide for cutting. As, you can see, I had some trouble eyeballing the fifths, but that didn't matter, because the pencil marks ended up on the bottom.

On the top, I drew out the Roman numerals, counting by 10s (like the penguins), from 10 to 100.

Then, I spread the penguins, and icebergs, randomly around the table.

In order to rescue the penguins, the children had to find the correct iceberg, with the Roman numeral corresponding to the number on the penguin, to place it on.

They could tell they were doing it right, because the foam pieces fit together in order, like a puzzle - more or less.

Omg...this is pure genius! And SO cute! I love all your ideas. K made the fraction today and she loved it! Now, I will have to make this one too!

Brilliant!!! I am always amazed at the way you tailor one activity for all of your children. I have seen teachers struggle with children of different abilities in one grade, and yet you are able to turn one lesson into something appropriate for the span of ages in your house. Amazing.

I love the ice berg puzzle. We used fun foam in our house earlier this week for clocks.
