Take your favorite sugar cookie dough, and divide it into three equal portions. Dye one portion blue, one portion red (I know, I know...more red dye, but I tried strawberries, and they didn't work, so it's back to the food coloring), and leave one portion plain.

Next roll your portions into ropes, two or three for each color, and place them side by side, on parchment paper, or a floured surface. Use a rolling pin to flatten them down to about 1/4 of an inch.

Using a star shaped cookie cutter, cut out and bake some stars (350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes).

Dough scraps can be rolled into balls, dipped in white sugar, and baked, for a patriotic tie-dye sort of look.

Of course, you could also...
- Go to a parade.
- Learn interesting facts about Independence Day at www.history.com/content/fourthofjuly
- Have a water fight with the kids.
- Print out a constellation chart for some in between fireworks star gazing at www.spaceplace.nasa.gov/en/kids/st6starfinder/star_finder_jul.pdf
- Take a nap.
- Make kick the can ice cream...
It's great to be a homeschooler!
