Ed Emberley Inspired Cookies

While we had Ed Emberley's Circle Drawing Book book out, I figured we might as well carry the art themed fun we were having with circles, on into snack time.

E (age 6) helped me roll and cut our sugar cookie dough (click here, for the recipe) into some of the geometric designs from the book, and wow! Now I know why love2learn2day referred to this as a math book.

Cutting the circles into symmetrical halves, and then quarters, and arranging them on the cookie sheet to form the designs was like working a tangram puzzle, only harder. We had already made some of the animals, and flowers in the book, with paper circles, but the geometric designs proved more challenging.

I was really amazed at how well E did with the designs, and how much fun she had making them.

And, aren't the cookies pretty?

Mind you, each one is really three cookies in one, so if you decide to try some Emberley-type cookies, you might want to keep your circles small.

But otherwise, all you need for an entertaining math, art, and baking lesson is a batch of sugar cookie dough, dyed in the colors of your choosing, a glass, or round cookie cutter, and a butter knife.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

Now, to continue with the Ed Emberly cookie idea, you should make thumbprint cookies to go along with his Thumbprint book...
