Tortilla Snowflakes

We've become quite fond of making cinnamon tortilla crisps since seeing them on Whimsy Love. But, last night, we decided to shake things up a bit, and match them to the weather, by trimming them into snowflakes (we have more flakes in the forecast for today).

We folded the tortillas in half, and then brought the sides together twice, to form a triangle.

Using kitchen scissors, we cut triangles out of all three sides, just as if we were making paper snowflakes.

We unfolded them, and coated them with butter.

We sprinkled one with sugar and cinnamon, and saved the other for powdered sugar, after they had baked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes, so they were crispy.

After snacking on the snowflakes, we decided the cinnamon and sugar variety is still our favorite. It's not quite as messy, and tastes like pie crust - yum. So, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

It's great to be a homeschooler.

We've made the tortillas a couple of times now and finally took some pictures for my blog. Thank you for sharing-my oldest took the ingredients and idea to share for a babysitting project. The kids loved them! (We agree that the cinnamon sugar version tastes like pie crust sticks.)

These edible snowflakes are great for fine motor(cutting and folding)and they also contain wonderful extensions into various curriculum areas. Fractions exist in the folding (in 1/2, 1/4 ...) Geometric shapes are cut from the tortilla. It can elicit a discussion of symmetry. A lesson on crystals (ice and sugar)has a nice springboard in this cooking activity as well. Not only are these snowflakes tasty, but very educational as well. Mindy@recipestoreading.com
