Gingerbread Men - A First Snow Day Tradition

I had planned a day of cranberry science - popping, and pectin, and puddings, and more, but we woke up this morning to our first real snow of the year.

The children went outside to play, and I put the cranberries back in the fridge, pulling out the molasses, flour and sugar, instead. By tradition we celebrate the first real snow (when it actually starts to stick), with hot chocolate and gingerbread men.

This year we followed a recipe from the back of Carol Jones' The Gingerbread man. You can view the recipe with the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon. Just type "recipe" in the "search inside this book" box, to bring up the correct page.

I wasn't sure about it at first, because it doesn't call for any cinnamon. But, the children seemed to like the gingery cookies, and the dough didn't require any time in the refrigerator, making it nice for a quick baking session.

We read a few other gingerbread man type stories, as well. The characters and endings differ, but the main message is pretty well the same in all of them - gingerbread men are very mischievous, and prone to hasty action.

So, E (age 6) worked on one large gingerbread man...

...while D (age 8) and C (age 5) made smaller boys and girls...

...figuring, that with so many children, our cookie man wouldn't have any time left for trouble.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

Hmmm..... I could make a tradition for the first time it stays below 80 for more than 3 days? That could be one....

Great tradition!

Wow, first snow already. I am afraid we will have to wait some time yet for that. Great tradition.
