I Corinthians 13 - Valentine Craft

Since today is Sunday, it seemed only right to place a Bible into our Valentine surprise box, along with two large poster board hearts (with poster board left over from our broken heart puzzle), five small poster board hearts, and 5 slightly smaller white paper hearts, ribbon, crepe paper, pens, glue, and glitter glue, for a Fancy Nancy Heart to Heart inspired craft.

Yesterday, we learned about the heart. Today we learned about love, from I Corinthians 13: 4-8.

I read the verses to the children from the NIV -

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Then, the girls (ages 5 and 7) printed the word "Love" on one of the larger poster board hearts, first in pencil, then traced over with glitter glue.

Focusing in on verse six, and the beginning of seven, I had them print the words - "protects", "trusts", "hopes", "perseveres", and "fails" on the white hearts.

We talked about what each word means, and then I asked them when love did them, and wrote "always" or "never" above each word, accordingly.

The girls glued the white hearts to the center of the small red hearts, and then taped the backs of the red hearts to ribbons...

...and the other end of the ribbons to the remaining large heart.

We scooped the small hearts and ribbons to the center of the large heart, and glued on a crepe paper boarder, pinching the streamer together as we went, to make it ruffle.

Then, we spread the ribbons back out...

...and glued...

...the "love" heart, on top, in the center of the other heart.

We used tape donuts on the back, to hang the Valentine, though I'm sure you could punch a couple of holes in the top for a hanging ribbon, just as easily.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

  1. So very pretty. I've seen variations on this craft using this chapter, but I like the extra steps you added.
