With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this week, I've been scratching my head trying to come up with a good activity to teach the children about equality, and diversity.
Finally, I decided we'd make cookies (for those of you who read this blog often, you know that's pretty much my solution for everything).
The little ones watched as I mixed up a batch of sugar cookie dough, and divided it into four bowls. I asked them if they could sing "Jesus Loves the Little Children", which they did (if you don't know the song, click here, for the tune, and lyrics).
Then, I let them add red, yellow, and black to three of the bowls, leaving one white.
We rolled the dough out, and cut out gingerbread men shapes.
After, they were baked, we tried adding faces with edible markers, but they didn't show up well on all the cookies, so we switched to frosting faces, and added some little outfits.
As, they ate their snack, we talked about how the cookies look different, but taste the same. The only difference is the color. Then we talked about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dream, that one day people would recognise the same thing about people, so they could stop seeing them as their colors, and start seeing them as people.
And, of course, we had our cookies with M(i)LK. :)
It's great to be a homeschooler.
Cute idea!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. We didn't focus on MLK this year, but definitely will next year when she is a bit older to understand the concept of the past better.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fantastic idea! Totally gets the message across, without belittling its importance, but also without bringing up traumatic tales of the past while children are still very young. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHa Ha M(i)LK!!
ReplyDeleteSo so cute! I love it!
