Summer Fun Day 19 - Craft Feather Quill Pens
I've had "make a feather quill pen" on our to-do list for quite some time. It's one of those homeschool right of passage projects, like making homemade bread. For some reason it had never occurred to me that we could use craft feathers.
The children got the idea, strangely enough, from the ScienceWiz DNA Experiment Kit they were fiddling with yesterday. There is a craft feather included in the kit, to go along with a "DNA ink" experiment.
They passed on the experiment, but were very keen to try writing with a feather. So, we put away the kit, and pulled out our seven inch craft feathers and food coloring, instead. Now I just feel silly for not trying it sooner, as the children loved it, and it couldn't have been more simple.
Just snip the end of the quill off diagonally...
...to form a point...
...mix up some homemade ink (the kit came with an ink base, but we found water and...
...food coloring alone, worked just fine)...
...dip the quill into the "ink"...
...and your ready to scribble out...
...as many far fetched fairy tales as strike your fancy.
It's great to be a homeschooler.
Hee hee, the ink spattered on the drawing, so it looks like the non-bored harmony has blood involved. It's probably my sleep deprived state that thinks this is funny.
ReplyDeleteTicia - I'm surprised the children didn't think of that. They claimed the splatters were around the messy artist of the family, because she had been painting. The children holding video games in the picture were neat and tidy. I'm guessing this was meant as a cautionary tale for Mom..."if you want a neat house, skip the crafts, and buy us some more video games" :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this. It is so nice to see you guys again and all the wonderful things you are up to.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Who has such an awesome handwriting in the family?
