Canada Day Sun-Catcher Craft

The girls made the sun-catcher below, at Vacation Bible School in June, and had so much fun with it they've been begging to make another one at home.

I finally relented this week, adapting it for Canada Day, by cutting a maple leaf shape, using a cookie cutter for a guide, out of the center of two foam plates.

The girls colored the sides of the plates (on the front of one, and the back of the other) red with a Sharpie marker.

Then they glued the two plates together, being careful to match up the maple leaves, with the colored sides of the plates out...

...sandwiching a coffee filter between them, to cover the entire maple leaf.

They turned the leaf red, by adding a few drops of watered down food coloring onto the coffee filter, and then watching as the color spread out across the entire leaf.

At their request, we also made a few with multiple colors of food coloring...

...for a "firework" effect. I poked a hole in the top of the plates, and threaded through a piece of yarn for  hanging their "flags" in the windows...

...and added the opening line of "O Canada!" just for fun.  The Man of the House likes to sing it "O Canada! Your air is fresh and clean."  So, it's sort of a personal mission of mine to make sure the children learn the actual words at sometime or other before they are grown.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

P.S. - I had a great, and restful break away from blogging in June.  Sadly, we didn't make it fishing even once thanks to weather, and other impediments, but we did have lots of other fun, some of which I hope to share through the rest of the summer.  Thanks for standing by and checking back!

  5. Emily - I'm not, but I went to junior high and most of my high school in Canada, and my brother married a Canadian girl, and is a landed emigrant with Canadian children - and I'm always ready for a holiday :)

  7. Fair enough....our flag is much easier than yours to make into a suncatcher, because we just have one maple leaf instead of fifty stars.
