Child Directed Science - Wind

One day, while I was busy making lunch, C (age 5), set to work at the table, decorating a couple of toilet paper tubes.

After sticking a square of toilet paper in the top of each tube, she informed me they were things to tell if the wind was blowing.

She asked me to turn on the fan for her, so she could test them.

The toilet paper blew out of the tubes...

...so she added tape to her design, securing the toilet paper sheets in place.

Then, she asked me to help her tape one of her devices to the railing of our deck, and pronounced it a success.

The wind was blowing "that way" (or for the more scientifically minded - from the south).

It hasn't rained since she taped her device outside, so I've left in place, and the funny thing is, I've found myself glancing at it, throughout the day, to see if the wind is blowing.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

  1. There seems to be a lot of child-directed schooling this week. :)
This is a great experiment. You may have an inventor!

  2. Love it! The best science activities I have ever seen was child led. This is great! I would of been watching the tube as well. Thank you for sharing.

  4. C's science rather reminds me of how my boys plan science sometimes.

  6. Great stuff there! I always love it when my kids get into the tubes and shoe boxes - I know that a neat invention will be just around the corner - it's great when we can let them research what they are interested in at the moment.

  7. I love a curious mind at work. I

I note in your previous post that you mentioned fall brings spiders. As our temperatures heat up it means cockroaches, more geckos and flies. For me, this is the downside of warmer temps.
