We read Jayme and Ron Schlitt's Rags, Riches, and the Robe, this morning. The story, by the father/daughter duo (Jayme is just 15), is a fairy tale like, parable based on Matthew 25: 23:
The master said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!"
The "servants", in this particular story, are a group of rags, left over from making the royal robe, who find themselves in the king's kitchen. One rag believes it's destined to be a flag, and spends it's time fluttering. Another is ideally shaped to be a handkerchief, and another has a twisty quality well suited for bow tie work.
None of them thinks much of being used as common kitchen rags, except for one - a misshaped, threadbare rag, who is just happy to have a chance to be useful. And, because of his usefulness, he's chosen for a special task, by the king, himself.
It's a nice reminder of what it means to be a faithful servant, in life's kitchen. And, did I mention the illustrator is my niece (insert big Auntie smile, here). I purchased the book for that reason, but was very pleased with the story, and it's message, too.
After we read the story, I presented the children each with an old rag, and suggested they make themselves useful (insert sly Mommy grin, here).

It's great to be a homeschooler.
It sounds like a great message...congrats to your niece for becoming an illustrator!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting that your niece is the illustrator! Congratulations! The book sounds wonderful.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea!
ReplyDeleteYour niece is very talented!
ReplyDeleteThat is so WONDERFUL for your niece! You should post where we can purchase the book, 'cause it sounds great, and we can all support your niece in her creative endeavors!
ReplyDeleteLet me know where I can buy the book please...seriously...
Wonder Mom - I purchased my copy from Amazon - thanks for asking!
ReplyDeleteDid it really work?
ReplyDeleteHow exciting that your niece has illustrated the story, and the story line sounds intriguing. Thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeletePhyllis - In a manner of speaking. The younger girls were the most enthusiastic about using the rags - so the actual cleaning that got done, was minimal - but they put their whole hearts into it :)
ReplyDeleteI so need to find that book, it sounds ADORABLE!
