We took inspiration for Jill Frankel Hauser's Science Play, Beginning Discoveries for 2 to 6 Year Olds, to make rockets for the little ones, to keep them busy between the barbecue, and the fireworks.
We made paper cones by cutting a slit from the outside edge to the middle, of a circle of paper, and then overlapping the paper on each side of the slit, until we had a nice cone shape, which we held in place with tape.
At first, we used a salad plate as a template for our circles, but we discovered smaller cones, made from drinking glass sized circles, worked better for small hands.
We decorated the cones with tissue paper streamers, taping, or gluing them on.
Then, it was just a matter of setting a cone on top of an empty dish soap bottle, with the nozzle open...
...and giving it a good squeeze.

ReplyDeleteSo FUN!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome!!! Happy 4th of July!! :-)
ReplyDeleteBother, I just deleted my comments. I love this idea, I just need to get an empty soap bottle.......
ReplyDeleteAnd on the whole ice and string thing, Jeff thinks that is the coolest experiment and wants to do that with the kids.
Oh, that's a wonderful idea. We usually have the HUGE bottles of dish soap so this wouldn't work as well... but it just so happens that we always make foamerators at the 4th of July and buy a small bottle of a different brand of dish soap just for making bubbles. The kids conveniently emptied it yesterday! We will have to try making an air rocket this week. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this. I will have to try this for Selena. I know she would just love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun activity - a great way to keep kids busy during those long hours between dinner and fireworks. I'll file this away for next year. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely going to have to give this a try. Looks like tons of fun. My little one will be amazed.
