What My Child is Reading - June 19, 2010

Our Vacation Bible School had a cowboy theme this week, so I picked up a few cowboy themed books for the kids to read for the library, summer reading challenge, too.

Rodeo Time by Stuart J. Murphy, is a level 3, Math Start story, dealing with telling time, and making schedules. The telling time bit was too advanced for my youngest two (ages 4 and 5), but they enjoyed hearing the story of a brother/sister pair helping out at the rodeo.

Sam's Wild West Show by Nancy Antle is a fun, easy reader, written at the first, or second grade reading level. It's a cute story about a Buffalo Bill style, wild west show, that arrives in a small town just in time to save the day.

Sparky and Eddie Wild, Wild Rodeo! by Tony Johnston, our favorite for the week, is supposed to be aimed at 1st to 2nd grade readers too, though perhaps a little easier than Sam's Wild West Show. Johnston's story about two little boys competing in a school rodeo has a lot of potential for inspiring rodeo themed crafts, and games.

In fact, it's got us thinking about revisiting the paper bag stick horses we made last summer.

For more children's book reviews and recommendations, check out this week's What My Child Is Reading blog hop, hosted by Mouse Grows, Mouse Learns.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

  1. We haven't ventured into cowboy books yet, but I'd bet that Tornado Boy would like them. Thanks for the great suggestions.

  2. I'm doing fairy tales because our VBS theme is prince and princess!

I'll have to come back to these books because I'm sure they'd be popular.

  5. Fun theme! Have you read The Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires? We read it when we were studying Texas and I thought it was a great book. My kids loved it too!

  6. Thanks for joining WMCIR. I think our only exposure to wild wild west so far was a Veggie Tales Moses episode. The last book sounds intriguing - maybe I'll see if we can find it.
