Let's Fly A Kite!

We picked up a few kite flying books on our last trip to the library. Our favorite was Let's Fly A Kite by Stuart J. Murphy. It's a MathStart story, about symmetry, and includes do-together activities, at the back of the book.

The girls, however, were more interested in flying kites, themselves. Never mind, that it wasn't all that windy, or that we didn't have any kites. They decided they could make their own.

I went easy on myself, and printed out a template for Family Fun's "The Easiest Kite Ever".

It was pretty easy - no sticks, and only a single piece of paper - just print, cut, fold, add string, a tail, and you're done. The girls added some non-symetrical, crayon touches, too.

We used a streamer for the tail, and wrapped our extra string around a piece of cardboard. With no breeze, we opted to keep the strings short, for running...

It's great to be a homeschooler.

  1. How fun! It looks like the spring is finally coming to Montana as well. We read this book in the summer, but Anna was very lukewarm about it.

  2. We're going to be reading about kites here today or tomorrow as well. And maybe making a trip to a local kite store.
Maybe I'll steal your kite design.

  5. I am not the most "mechanical" person in the world, so I think that simple kite from Family Fun is right up my ally!

  6. We did this book this week too! Jordan (3) loved it and asked to have read to him a bunch. We also made kites but didn't attempt to fly them. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun with yours!
