My reading with the little ones this week, centered around learning to tell time.
We read Bunny Day, Telling time from Breakfast to Bedtime, following a family of bunnies through their day, from eight in the morning, to eight at night. It's told in rhyme, which makes it easy for younger children to join in, and guess the time of day, which is also shown on a clock, or watch, somewhere on each page. The illustrations are adorable, except that the bunnies ears are too short, making them look a little more like angry cats, than rabbits.
Then we had three stories completing the Hickory Dickory Dock nursery rhyme. Two that followed the mouse on around the clock:
Jim Aylesworh's The Completed Hickory Dickory Dock.
And, The Clock Struck One, A Time-Telling Tale, by Trudy Harris, which takes on a Gingerbread Man-like quality, by adding an animal, or person, to chase the mouse, after each hour.
We also read, Hickory Dickory Dock, by Keith Baker, that doesn't complete the mouse's story, but instead follows different animals, as they climb the clock, at each hour. The children enjoyed all of the stories, but this one has the biggest, and clearest, clock faces of all of them, and so was most useful for my purpose of teaching time telling.
Finally, in non-clock related themes, we had one dud, or rather one series of duds. I checked out the Kanji de Manga series, for my oldest son, who expressed an interest in learning Japanese. These books are supposed to teach the language through a comic book format. But, rather than incorporating new words into the comic story, they use the pictures as an aid for remembering new symbols, which did not appeal to my son. Or, it might be, that his twelve year old boyness, was insulted the fact that many of the covers feature girls. Whatever the case, he hid the whole series under the couch, rather than taking them to his room.
Find out what other families are reading at this week's What My Child Is Reading link up, at Mouse Grows, Mouse Learns.
It's great to be a homeschooler.
I found the completed Hickory Dickory Dock at a Half Price one time and snatched it up. But, I"m going to have to search out the others when we cover time.
ReplyDeleteit looks like a great week for books about clocks and time. I will have to remember these books for when we start working with clocks.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices. We just checked out Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris after reading her Pattern Bugs, and I am definitely going to be on a lookout for the Clock Struck One. You have a great way of teaching through books, science and food.
