The Crow, Story + Art (stART) Circle Craft

For our stART project (story + art, hosted by A Mommy's Adventures), we read The Crow (A Not So Scary Story) by Alison Paul. It is a story about a little boy, with an active imagine, who sees several frightening figures in the crow outside his window. The artwork in the book is excellent, and probably worthy of an art lesson on its own.

But, we stuck instead, with a simple circle craft.

We cut two circle for each crow, one for the body, and one for the wings, which we cut in half, just like in our pumpkin craft. This time though we cut three different sizes of circle (two circles from each size, for a total of six circles). I also cut three beaks, and three sets of feet, and provided three sets of google eyes in three different sizes.

After the children sorted the parts and pieces according to matching sizes, they glued their crows together.

Placing the crows from largest to smallest, they were able to create perspective, as if the birds were flying in to land in a field.

To make things even easier for my youngest, I just had her glue the eyes to a black sheet of construction paper, for crows in the night. Then, we talked about what the little boy in the story might think if he saw the eyes, when really they were just cute little birds in the dark.

You can find more story related art projects, here, at A Mommy's Adventures.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

  6. I love how you did three different sizes. I sometimes work with my son on sequencing and this would be a great easy craft to use.

  9. I like how you did different versions of the craft for the different ages of kids! I've just found you via the stART links on A mommy's adventures and am sure I'll be visiting again, seeing as kids' books and the activities they inspire in me and my kids is exactly what I blog about! I'm also really enjoying all your recipes - and can't believe you've already got snow :-) Looking forward to reading you again soon.
