Shalom Sesame is a Hebrew/English version of Sesame Street. Although, much like Plaza Sesamo, it has a slightly different format and a few extra characters than the American version of Sesame Street. We owned the entire set on VHS, but when our old player finally died, we switched over to DVDs entirely, and so sold this set. From time to time I find myself really missing it as a supplement to other lessons.
It teaches a little bit the the modern Hebrew language, and a good deal of Jewish culture. Although it is a definitely dated (segments with actresses such as Nell Carter or Mary Tyler Moore really bring that home), so you'll be getting more of an 80's picture of Israel. Even so, it spotlights particular cities and events, and can be a useful addition to a Passover, Hanukkah, or multi-cultural unit study.
I've noticed that now the entire set can be purchased on DVD, which is nice. Before you rush out to buy it though, I would suggest that you take a look at some of the clips of the show offered on YouTube. I wasn't able to find an entire episode there, but if you play several of the video clips, you'll get an idea of the quality of the show.
Again, it is in English and Hebrew, so it's not too intimidating for an English speaking child. But, it can be a little off-putting to hear Cookie Monster or Bert and Ernie with different voices. Still, trying to catch the Hebrew numbers in some of those fast paced Sesame Street animations can be a real kick for parent and child alike.
It's great to be a homeschooler!
